Hubei University is the first to establish the Portuguese major in central China. In 2015, the Portuguese major was approved by the Ministry of Education of P. R. China, and officially started its enrolment in 2016, with an annual amount of 30 students.
We are committed to cultivating internationally-minded innovative multilingual talents. In addition to the mastery of language and culture of Portuguese-speaking countries, the students are also expected to enhance their English proficiency. We support our students to study and exchange abroad through various cooperative programmes, and encourage them to choose their academic interest according to their own intentions and strengths, so as to cultivate high-level professionals with coordinated development in knowledge, competence and quality, and with a high sense of social responsibility and qualification in various Portuguese-related job posts.
Teaching Staff
Up to September 2017, there are 5 full-time teachers of Portuguese, all of whom have obtained their master's degrees. Among them, two teachers graduated from overseas universities, and three from domestic key universities. All the five teachers had overseas experiences in studying or working.
We have been dedicated to teaching and research. Up till now, there are two open courses at university level and College Portuguese has been listed on the UOOC of Shenzhen University as well as on the XuetangX of Tsinghua University. Besides, we have published 6 papers, and have been granted 3 projects on teaching reform in total.

We attach importance to improving academic exchanges. In 2017, we assigned three young teachers to Beijing Foreign Studies University to attend a training class for Chinese teachers of Portuguese, and two teachers to attend a seminar on "China-Latin America Joint Development". At the end of July 2017, we assigned one teacher to guide our Portuguese majors attend the summer school held by Macao University.
Teaching Resources
By the end of July 2017, we have been equipped with 283 volumes of books and materials in Chinese and Portuguese, of which 81 are hardcopy and 202 are electronic version.
In terms of curriculum resources, the curriculum system of Portuguese major covers a variety of modules such as language-based courses, culture-based courses, application-based courses etc., shaping a complete and well-structured framework with our own characteristics.
In terms of social resources, we enjoy the opportunity to study in Brazil based on the cooperation between Hubei University and the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. Also, through the channel of Confucius Institute at Sao Paulo State University in Brazil, our teachers and students may go to Brazil as volunteers for teaching Chinese.
Cultivating Process
Up till now, our students have participated as language service volunteers in large-scale events such as receiving Brazilian visiting delegation and foreign guests attending the "China-Latin America Joint Development" international academic seminar; and they have been unanimously praised by the event organizers for their dedication and expertise.
We have also organized a series of "Portuguese Corner" activities to invite Brazilian teachers and international students who love the languages and cultures of Portuguese-speaking countries to come together, which were widely acclaimed and applauded.
