Next to Wuhan University, the Japanese major of Hubei University has set up the second Japanese UG program in Hubei Province to enrol students. Since 1993, we have cultivated nearly 1000 graduates of Japanese major. Since its inception, the Department of Japanese has been focusing on the intercultural characteristics of talent cultivation with the philosophy to seek development in its own way. The Japanese major is divided into two orientations: Japanese language and culture, and Translation. We focus on developing intercultural, all round and innovative professionals of Japanese with solid foundation to meet the demand from social development.
The Department of Japanese has 11 full-time teachers and 2 Japanese teachers, all of whom are involved in undergraduate teaching and have made a series of achievements in teaching and scientific research. For example, we have published dozens of teaching-related papers, many of which have been published in important academic journals of Japanese academia, such as Japanese Learning and Research, and have five projects granted by Hubei Provincial Department of Education and Hubei University. Moreover, we have been granted over 30 research projects at all levels in the past five years, including 3 projects at provincial and ministerial level, 20 projects at the level of departments and bureaus, with a total of RMB¥.214, 000 in longitudinal research funding. We have also published 94 papers, including 2 papers listed in CSSCI (Class A), 9 papers listed in CSSCI (Class B), and 13 papers listed in CSSCI (Class C). In addition, we have published a total of 2 monographs and 5 textbooks.

Relying on the student association “Sakura Club”, we have organized a series of extracurricular activities, such as speaking contest, cheerleading contest, dancing contest, photography contest, Japanese dubbing contest, Japanese writing contest, and Japanese cultural experience activities, etc., to develop the students' practical competence of language use.
We actively carry out foreign exchanges and have so far established long-term cooperation with Japanese universities such as Niigata University and Nagasaki Prefectural University. As a result, we have carried out “Exchange of Studying Abroad” program for students, and send students to study in Japan annually. We have also carried out academic visits and researches with Waseda University and Sophia University. In addition, we have frequently participated in various exchanges between the Chinese and Japanese governments and non-governmental organizations.
