About
The School of Foreign Languages of Hubei University can trace its origin to the Department of Foreign Languages of Wuhan Normal College, with the English UG Program set up in 1973 (next to Wuhan University and the Central China Normal University in Hubei Province), and with the Japanese UG Program set up in 1993(next to Wuhan University). 2001 and 2009 saw the establishment of the French major and the Translation and Interpreting Major respectively. 2016 was marked by so big an event -- intake of the first Portuguese UG Program that is considered the only school in Central China to offer Portuguese learning with BA degree.
Together, our School form a community that is unique in central China in its breadth and depth of foreign languages learning programs, offering an impressive array of comprehensive practical and research BA and MA courses, and our teaching staff work hard to develop our students' innovation spirit and critical thinking on a qualities-education development basis. We prepare our graduates to enter a wide variety of employment fields.
We have encouraged and supported the international cooperation and exchanges for students benefits. Wide and deep links have been set up with overseas universities and institutions in the US, the UK, Australia, France and Japan, etc. to build mutual beneficial research partnerships, teaching partnerships, studying abroad and exchange links -- The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, The University of California, Berkeley, The University of Manchester, Durham University, Lancaster University, The University of New South Wales, Waseda University, Niigata University, University of Toulouse - Jean Jaurès. We also work with our sister universities -- The University of Macau to tailor summer school programs to our Portuguese undergraduates. Some top students in our school are sent to work as volunteers annually to the US, Brazil, Poland, Thailand, etc. to provide Chinese language and culture teaching services.
With the abundant teaching and research facilities available, our School houses a total of 26 spaces of multimedia language studios, audio-visual rooms, self-learning centers and a simultaneous interpreting lab, and more than 470 sets of teaching equipment. CAT self-learning center is fitted with state-of-the-art SDL Trados Software and with English-Chinese Parallel Corpora (2 million words/sentences in size). Our interpreting booths, as the first in Central China universities, are equipped with Televic conference interpreting equipment, giving students the opportunity to train in the same kind of facilities used in the European Parliament and United Nations General Assembly and meeting the requirement of simultaneous interpreting training, conference simultaneous interpreting and assisting language teaching.
We collaborate locally well with many different organizations -- primary and high schools, technical secondary schools, Foreign Affairs (Overseas Chinese Affairs) Office of Hubei Provincial People’s Government, Hubei Provincial Museum, Revolution of 1911 Museum, Hubei Provincial Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Wuhan Honda Trading Co., Ltd. The French Consulate in Wuhan and Health and Family Planning Commission of Hubei Province.

Spotlights:
s Our students generally outperform their peers from other universities for their considerably higher percentage of passing Test for English Majors-Band 4 and Band 8.
s In recent three years, at or above the provincial level, more than 60 people have been awarded prizes in academic competitions and 13 projects funded by Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program.
s SOMA Troupe was presented by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China with Excellence Award of University’s Campus Cultural Development and by the provincial government with the title of Outstanding University Student Association of Hubei Province.
s Our graduate employment rate constantly reaches as high as 91%. Every year, some high-challenging graduates who choose to further their study abroad are admitted by some world-prestigious universities in the US, the UK, France, Japan etc. A lot of distinguished graduates have established themselves as a leading force in academic, business and political circles.

More than 30 staff members have won various honorary titles and academic awards ,such as “the Master of Teaching in Hubei”, “the Top Teacher in Hubei University”, or “Outstanding Youth Translators”, “Outstanding Academic Adviser” or won prizes in teaching skill contests, etc.
Research
Our school offers the postgraduate programs in the following research fields: the First-level MA Program of Foreign Languages and Literature (including the English language and Literature Program, the Linguistics and Applied Linguistics Program), the English Curriculum and Teaching Methodology (ELT-oriented Pedagogy), the Master of English Education Program and the Master of Translation an Interpreting Program. In 2012, the First-level MA Program of Foreign Languages and Literature was accredited as Hubei Province’s prioritized discipline. Our staff are involved in a range of centers and networks within the University.
